I have a daughter who is interested in being a physician. We are just starting TJED and are looking for some classics for her to read. Any ideas?
Thanks!

Great Men of Medicine by Ruth Fox

The Courage of Dr. Lister
Galen and the Gateway of Medicine by Jeanne Bendick
Histories of medicine--I've found several good histories and historical novels in the older Reader's Digest condensed books (at yardsales and thrift stores); particularly the volumes from the sixties and fifties. On the other hand, the Wall Street Journal has a lot of medical-related stories that are current, where the early Reader's Digest volumes will have outdated practices and excellent literature about the people who have practiced medicine. Only one name comes to mind; I think it's _A Century of Surgery_, which focuses on advances during the 19th century.
Old encyclopedias are not useful in this field; I got rid of my 1961 set when I realized that it had nothing on the immune system. At that time the purpose of white blood cells was only partly known and lymph nodes were frequently removed when inflamed because their purpose was not understood.

Thanks for the ideas. They look great!
