American Classics for the Elementary Crowd
We are coming up on a year of American Studies for homeschooling. Our oldest is 7 years old and is a history aficionado. I'm looking for some good books to read aloud to all of our children, but are challenging, too.
What recommendations do you have for such things? Specifically, I'd like things written perhaps by early presidents or about them. The life of pilgrims, pioneers, immigrants.
We've read the entire Laura Ingalls series as well as many of the Childhood of Famous Americans series. We're hungry for more, and I want the opportunity to start reading them myself over the summer before reading them to our children this fall.
Thank you for your help!
I recommend books by Jean
I recommend books by Jean Fritz, as well as the D'Aulaire's history books. My son just turned seven and he has been eating up these books all year. I have been using the Beautiful Feet curriculum as a guide for him. I just check the books out from the library and before I have a chance to read them, he has them all finished!
Also recommend:
The Courage of Sarah Noble
The Matchlock Gun
Caddie Woodlawn
My children also have enjoyed the American Girl books. They are somewhat fluffy but I know they are clean and accurate in their portrayal of history.
the sonlight website has some ideas: http://www.sonlight.com/history-geography-3.html
http://www.redshift.com/~bonajo/history.htm has lists of books for various eras
A few we love...
While none of these are written by Presidents, they all deal with or pertain to Presidents, Founding Fathers, and other significant historical things.
Any books by the following authors would be fabulous. We love Cheryl Harness, Genevieve Foster, and Dennis Fradin.
Across Five Aprils
Across Five Aprils is a really good one about the Civil War. Then there's _Johnny Tremain_, _Calico Captive_, _The Strawberry Girl_, _The Willow Plate_, about several different time periods.
_Go Find Hanka_, _Follow My Leader_
